How to Celebrate Mother’s Day This Year

Mother’s Day will be here before you know it – and it needs to be celebrated.

A lot of things have been different over the last year. We have had to find new ways to maintain connected relationships with our loved ones and friends while practicing social distancing. Just as our workdays now look different, so does each holiday. Even long-standing family traditions have had to be pushed aside to keep everyone safe.

Though we are slowly gravitating toward a safer world, we are not in the clear yet. This means treating mom on Mother’s Day may require you to think outside the box.

Treat Mom to a Zoom Class. Believe it or not, you can learn just about anything in an online class since COVID-19 has forced us to change the way we do business. Why not sign the mom in your life up for a class to virtually learn something she would love? For instance, a cooking class, a painting class, or even a one on floral arrangements.

Get Outside. Take your immediate family – including mom – outside. Go for a walk or hike and have a picnic. This is a thoughtful way to make the most of the day without increasing health risks. Not only is the fresh air rejuvenating for the mind and body, but it also means getting away from distractions and showing undivided attention to mom.

Make Her Home Sparkly Clean. Moms work hard – without complaining. Taking care of the kids, keeping the house clean, and making sure schedules and life flow smoothly happens on the daily. Send mom off for a bit of self-care (at a spa for the day or by creating a spa experience at home) while you round up the fam to clean the house for her.

Mom’s love a clean house – especially one they did not have to clean. Taking this chore away while allowing her to relax will be a much-welcomed Mother’s Day gift.

Plan a Day All About Her – and Print the Itinerary. Let mom know that she needs to keep her calendar clear. Start with breakfast, plan activities such as a walk in the park, an art project with the kids, an at-home spa time in the afternoon, her favorite food for dinner, a movie night with popcorn watching her favorite movie, and so on. Whatever she likes, this day is about her so plan it accordingly.

Type this all up on a cute itinerary and present it to her with some flowers. Regardless of what activities you plan, the time and thought put into the day will mean so much.

Get Together Virtually. If a mom in your life is too far away and travel is not an option, take advantage of all the things you can do without being in the same geographical location. Getting together for a virtual brunch or happy hour is a great place to start. You will begin to laugh and share and enjoy each other’s company – and feel the distance gap begin to diminish. Of course, you could always send her a delightful gift box in the mail. You know, something that can help give her a reason to partake in self-care. Sometimes that little reminder may be all she needs to indulge herself.

This year, mother’s day is going to have a little bit more vitality than last year. As more and more people are getting vaccinated, coming together is beginning to feel less risky. If your family has been vaccinated, you may find that your celebrations are a bit more lenient. Who knows – maybe your traditional mother’s day brunch will commence as usual.

Whatever you choose to do to celebrate the mom in your life, do so with caution. Each set of circumstances are different so do what is best for your family. Just be sure to celebrate mother’s day to the best of your ability. Moms may not ask for much, but they do deserve the world. Give it to her.
